Research summary
Dr. Bert Malengier-Devlies is a postdoctoral immunologist in the lab of Rebecca Gentek, working at the intersection of developmental immunology, disease modelling, and systems biology. His research explores how early-life immune disturbances shape lifelong health, with the translational goal of supporting immune resilience from the very first stages of life.
Trained at the REGA Institute (KU Leuven, Belgium), Dr. Malengier-Devlies developed broad expertise in both wet- and dry-lab approaches during his PhD, integrating mouse models with clinical samples to uncover immune mechanisms underlying autoinflammatory diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic further fueled his interest in viral pathogenesis and vaccine development. In his postdoctoral work, he has expanded his toolkit with advanced methodologies including fate-mapping, single-cell RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, and spatial omics. He applies these approaches to dissect the ontogeny of synovial macrophages and to investigate how early-life adverse events disrupt their development, with implications for chronic disease.
