Background

Dr Ashley Simpson is currently Co-Head: Institute for Language Education. 

Dr Ashley Simpson specialises in Intercultural Education, Intercultural Communication, Critical approaches to Democracy and Human Rights in Education, and, Critical studies in Education amongst other aspects. Simpson has  experience of working in higher education institutions in China, Finland and Russia.    

Simpson has published extensively on Intercultural Communication Education. He is the co-author (with Fred Dervin) of  Interculturality and the Political within Education (London: Routledge). Simpson has also co-edited the volumes The Meaning of Criticality in Education Research: Reflecting on Critical Pedagogy (2020: Palgrave Macmillan), and, Intercultural Competence in the Work of Teachers: Confronting Ideologies and Practices (London: Routledge).

Simpson has published research articles on Intercultural Communication Education in top international journals such as, British Journal of Educational Studies; Compare: A Journal of Comparative and International Education; Frontiers of Education in China; Intercultural Communication Education; International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism; Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development; and, Palgrave Communications, amongst others.

He currently holds visiting academic positions in China and in Canada.
