Background
Allan studied a BSc in Biochemistry at St Andrews University (2010 - 2014), with a final year project with Dr Carlos Penedo Esterio using FRET microscopy to look at the folding mechanism of the hammerhead ribozyme. He went on to do a research Masters in Biomedical Sciences at Glasgow University (2017 - 2018), with resreach projects with Professor Gwyn Gould (looking at transfection at a mechanism to disrupt sphingolopid involvment in the triggering of insulin production in HeLa cells) and Kathryn Elmer (regarding mRNA expression as correlated with phenotypic variation in trans-Baikalian and Scottish Arctic Charr).
Allan would then work as a Healthcare Associate Practitioner in the Medical Microbiology Laboratory of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (NHS Grampian) from 2019 to 2025, during which time he completed a Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Science with Ulster University and complete an IBMS Registration portfolio to become an HCPC registered Biomedicsal Scientist.
In May 2025 Allan joined the Scottish Human Papilloma Virus Reference Laboratory (SHPVRL) with NHS Lothian at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh as an Associate Clinical Scientist and began working towards ACA registration as a Clinical Scientist. Through this work Allan collaborates with the University of Edinburgh HPV Resreach Group based in the IRR, and headed by Dr Hana McMahon and Dr Kate Cuschieri (who is also director of the SHPVRL), in research and quality assurance.
