Background

I am a Deaf Teacher of Deaf Children and Young People as well as a qualified science teacher.  I teach all aspects of secondary Science (Key Stage 3 and 4 - England), with chemistry  as my specialism. British Sign Language is my preferred language for communication and is central to my everyday work with deaf children and young people.

I am currently the STEM Lead at Heathlands School for Deaf Children in St Albans, England with responsibility for Science, Geography, Design & Technology and Physical Education.

Research summary

My current research interests include the teaching of deaf children and young people, science education, generative learning theory, and the development of deaf children's scientific literacy in both written English and science-specific signs,  the role of science-specific signs in developing conceptual understanding.

Current research interests

Current PhD working title: Understanding science-specific signs: how deaf children make sense of the BSL glossary signs and what these reveal about their conceptual understandiung.
