Biography

Background

Dr Pennington is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer with the University of Edinburgh, and a Consultant Neurologist with NHS Forth Valley & NHS Lothian. Current academic work is on the development of a novel clinical tool for the evaluation of symptom awareness in neurodegenerative cognitive disorders. She is funded by an NRS Career Researcher Fellowship.

Between 2017 and 2021 Dr Pennington was a Senior Clinical Research Fellow on the European Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease study (EPAD). She is involved in a range of clinical trials in dementia at Edinburgh Dementia Prevention. She has previously been funded by a project grant from the BRACE charity investigating metacognition in cognitive disorders, and a David Telling charitable trust award investigating changes to brain, bladder and eye health in people starting haemodialysis. 

Previously, Dr Pennington was a consultant neurologist with North Bristol Trust (2016-2017) and NIHR Clinical Lecturer with the University of Bristol (2013-2016).  

Dr Pennington specialises in the diagnosis of cognitive disorders, with a particular interest in the promotion of brain health, and evaluation of symptom awarenes. She provides a weekly specialist cognitive clinics for older adults in the Memory Assessment and Treatment Service at Marchhall House, Marchhall Crescent, Edinburgh
