Background
Donald is a consultant general psychiatrist in NHS Lothian and Associate Medical Director (Mental Health) at NHS 24. He has combined research and clinical practice throughout his career. He was awarded MD in 2013 and promoted to Honorary Reader in 2017. He was a member of the NHS Digital Academy. He was appointed Director of the NHS Research Scotland (NRS) Mental Health Network in 2022. He was made a Fellow of the Generative AI Lab and of the British Computer Society in 2024. He was appointed NIHR Senior Investigator in 2025.
Research summary
Donald is interested in exploring the validity of psychiatric diagnoses using novel methods of phenotyping and using technological innovations, routine measurement and record linkage to improve mental health care and treatment.
