Background
Dr Dominique Balharry is the Global Respiratory Health Research Manager for the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Respiratory Health (RESPIRE), at the University of Edinburgh. She works at the intersection of research strategy, international collaboration, and health equity, supporting multidisciplinary teams to deliver impactful respiratory health research across diverse global settings.
With a strong focus on partnership-building and programme development, Dominique is passionate about strengthening research capacity, fostering meaningful cross-country collaboration, and translating evidence into action that improves health outcomes worldwide.
Dominique’s research background is in respiratory health. She gained her PhD from Cardiff University in 2005, before undertaking postdoctoral research in both academic and applied research environments. Her work focused on advancing understanding of respiratory disease through laboratory-based medical/health research, contributing to projects with direct clinical and public health relevance.
Working predominantly on international collaborations, Dominique developed broad experience spanning experimental research, cross-sector partnerships, and the coordination of complex, multi-site studies. Over time, her role increasingly combined hands-on scientific investigation with programme and project management responsibilities. In 2015, she transitioned fully into research management, bringing with her a strong foundation in respiratory science, interdisciplinary teamwork, and the practical delivery of high-quality research.
