Research summary
I have worked on early Christian monasticism and historical theology (ecclesiology and soteriology) but more recently my research has focussed on medieval and early modern religion in Scotland and Western Europe. Particular areas of interest are liturgy and liturgical interpretation, book history, religious material culture, education and reform movements.
My work has proposed a new understanding of the Scottish Reformation as a 'long reformation' which is both Protestant and Catholic and also a new terminology for the Scottish Reformation - I am interested in testing this. My most recent book was published by OUP at the end of 2015, Sacred Signs in Reformation Scotland: Interpreting Worship, 1488-1590.
Current research interests
I am currently working on the distinctive series of fifteenth and sixteenth century sacrament houses in Eastern Scotland, late medieval Scottish liturgical theology and on the medieval Scottish liturgical manuscripts recorded in my 2011 catalogue. At present I am leading a small team preparing a three volume edition of Scottish medieval liturgical calendars for publication by the Henry Bradshaw Society.Project activity
