Gambling On Success
This May alumni Tom Nevill, Dave Munn, Will Butler and Sandy Hendry will be testing their endurance with a challenge that will take them, and their bikes, from John O’Groats to Lands End by way of climbs up Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon.
Name | Degree Course | Year of Graduation |
---|---|---|
Tom Nevill | Mathematics | 2011 |
David Munn | Masters of Engineering with honours in Electrical and Mechanical | 2011 |
Sandy Hendry | Law (LLB Hons), Diploma in Legal Practice (Dip LP) | 2009; 2010 |
Will Butler | MA (Hons) English Literature | 2010 |
To make things even more tricky, the two week expedition (E2E3P), which will raise money for four different charities, will be completely unsupported. All bedding, cooking equipment, tents and supplies will strapped to the back of the bikes.
A new alumni club
As well as raising money for charity, the ride marks an important milestone in the life of the newly formed Gamblers Cycling Club.
The fledgling alumni sports club was set up in January this year and the seven founding members consist of six University of Edinburgh graduates and one current student.

Why Gamblers?
The name Gamblers comes from the EUHC song, 'The Gambler' by Kenny Rodgers and mirrors other Gambler monikered alumni teams in both hockey and cricket.
As the four riders met whilst playing hockey for the University the name feels especially appropriate.
My time at Edinburgh University Men’s Hockey Club was incredible, making some great friends, and making university life a real pleasure.
All four graduates work in Edinburgh and are sacrificing two weeks of holiday to complete the challenge.
