Background

Buffy completed her undergraduate studies in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, graduating with a first class degree. She then spent two years working in science communication and public engagement at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology. Subsequently, Buffy joined the Wellcome Trust Developmental Mechanisms PhD programme at the University of Cambridge, undertaking her PhD research in the Kolahgar Lab at the Department of Physiology, Development & Neuroscience. Her research broadly examined the roles of basement membrane-associated proteins in the intestinal epithelium, and identified a novel role for Syndecan, a basement membrane adhesion protein, in intestinal stem cell survival and maintenance of nuclear properties. Buffy is now a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Wood Lab, part of the Edinburgh Cell Death Collective, at the Institute of Regeneration and Repair. Her research investigates how efferocytosis, the process of clearing apoptotic material, influences the behaviour of macrophages, important cells of the immune system.

Alongside her other roles, Buffy has been extensively involved in higher education teaching. Since 2017, Buffy has held the position of Bye-Fellow in Writing Skills at Downing College, University of Cambridge, where she provides academic skills support to individuals and groups of undergraduate students studying a range of biological science subjects. Buffy has also developed and delivered original lecture material, covering topics including data handling, experimental design, cell signalling, and tissues, for the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Continuing Education Pre-Medical Studies course (Level 4). Buffy has delivered small group teaching for several subjects on the University of Cambridge’s Natural Sciences undergraduate degree course, including Biology of Cells and Cell and Developmental Biology, and has been an assessor for Natural Sciences Tripos exams.
