Background

I am committed to a Public Health policy approach, which includes addressing all forms of social and health inequalities, including economic inequalities, as well as combatting stigma and discrimination where they occur.

I hold a PhD in Youth Studies (University of London, 2017), which explored transitions to adulthood in contexts of disadvantage.  I also have the honour of holding a Senior Honorary Research Fellow position at Glasgow Caledonian University.

I have held leadership positions at several organisations, including as Director of Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) and as Chief Executive of Mentor UK and Angel Drug Services. From 2020 to 2024 I worked on alcohol policy with the World Health Organization, European Region. My activities included acting as lead author of WHO’s “European Framework for Action on Alcohol, 2022–25” and “Digital marketing of alcohol: challenges and policy options for better health in the WHO European Region”.

I am employed as a part-time Teaching Fellow on the Masters in Public Health (MPH) programme at University of Edinburgh.

Externally, I am currently working on several projects with the Institute of Public Health in Ireland, including supporting the evaluation of the Public Health (Alcohol) Act 2018. I have recently been appointed to the North South Alcohol Policy Advisory Group.

I represent the Royal Society of Arts as one of two Fellowship Councillors in Scotland. I ams also a co-convenor of the British Sociological Society (BSA) Alcohol Study Group.
