Background

Mathew Lyons is a specialty registrar in anaesthesia in South-East Scotland and a SCREDS Clinical Lecturer in Anaesthesia. His clinical and research focus is obstetric anaesthesia. His lectureship programme uses routinely collected maternity, prescribing and admission records to answer questions in obstetric anaesthesia where trials are not feasible, including epidural timing, postpartum analgesia use, haemorrhage after instrumental birth and postoperative ileus after caesarean birth. He is an Editorial Fellow at the journal Anaesthesia.

Mathew holds an MBChB with Honours from the University of Edinburgh. Prior to his medical training, he completed a PhD in Bioengineering at Trinity College Dublin, focusing on the mechanics of wound closure for laparoscopic surgery. His academic background also includes a Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics and a degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, both from Trinity College Dublin, where he was elected to the Scholarship of the University of Dublin.

Before moving into obstetric anaesthesia, Mathew's data analytics work included studies on inflammatory bowel disease, contributing to epidemiological research and investigations into biologic therapies, and developing prospective registries with data linkage studies to understand disease prevalence and treatment outcomes. He also led CaVaUK, a national survey of capnography display variation across UK hospitals, and has worked on machine learning methods for outcome prediction in perioperative medicine.

As an educator, Mathew supervises BSc students on the anaesthesia, health sciences and infectious diseases programmes, tutors for the South-East Scotland FRCA programme, and is faculty for the NHS Scotland national IMT simulation programme. He is a co-founder of MeFB, a feedback tool for medical educators (medicalfeedback.org).

Mathew's current research programme centres on obstetric anaesthesia. He is chief investigator on EARLY, a multicentre study of how epidural timing affects mode of birth and neonatal outcome, and on a prescribing-record study of persistent postpartum analgesia use. He also leads studies on haemorrhage risk after forceps birth and on the incidence and anaesthetic associations of acute colonic pseudo-obstruction after caesarean birth, and is co-chief investigator on a systematic survey of who is represented in anaesthesia randomised controlled trials against national surgical activity.

1. Epidemiology and Machine Learning Registry-based epidemiology and machine learning prediction modelling, developed through IBD epidemiology and perioperative outcome prediction.
