Background
Jenny Deans is an award winning Jeweller based at Coburg House Art Studios in Leith, Edinburgh.
Graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 2002, she then stayed in the jewellery department for another 2 years as an Artist in Residence where she continued to develop her designing and making skills while starting on her teaching career. Jenny has continued to develop both her own practice and her teaching practice since then with over 20 years of experience.
Jenny has been teaching at the University of Edinburgh and at Edinburgh College of Art since graduating. Jenny has also taught at Leith School of Art, Central Scotland School of Jewellery and runs her own classes at Coburg House Art Studios. Jenny has also developed classes for corporate clients such as VisitScotland and Reel Time Events and has even taught for a social enterprise charity, Johari, in Kenya.
Along side teaching on the Short Course Programme, Jenny is now the Course Collection Coordinator for the Art and Design Short Courses within the Open Studies programme of Lifelong Learning through the Centre for Open Learning at the University.
She creates elegant contemporary jewellery which has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. She has taken part in the prestigious Goldsmiths’ Fair exhibition in London and the Elements Festival of Jewellery, Silver and Gold in Edinburgh.
Her current work uses the ancient techniques of filigree and granulation, which she has been researching within the University Library collection and through the National Museum of Scotland. Jenny has been fascinated by the jewellery of the ancient Mesopotamians, Egyptians and Etruscans who used these techniques between 4000 and 2500 years ago. Jenny was awarded a VACMA grant to research and develop new work, experimenting with fusing and granulation in Argentium Silver.
