Background
Zahra graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2023, following the successful completion of a PhD project at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer, under Profs. E. Elizabeth Patton and Charley Gourley. Here, she studied the role of Aldehyde Dehydrogenase enzymes in ovarian cancer stem-like cell subpopulations, and whether these can be targeted with existing drugs. Prior to this, she completed a Master's degree in Cancer Biology at Imperial College London, and an undergraduate degree in Cancer Biology and Immunology from the University of Bristol. With this strong background in human genetics, immunology and cancer, she is now involved in the study of skin aging and repair in the lab of Dr Sofia Ferreira Gonzalez. Her current role as Lab Manager of the Ferreira Lab involves coordinating the day to day activities of the lab, as well as maintaining systems of work and assisting with research activities. In particular, she is responsible for much of the mouse microsurgical work carried out in the lab, including cutting-edge techniques in blood parabiosis and cross-species skin transplantation.
