Natalie Ring

Clinical Trial Coordinator and Senior Research Scientist

Background

I originally came to the University of Edinburgh to join the Laboratory for Bacterial Evolution and Pathogenesis (LBEP) at the Roslin Institute in December 2019 as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. My primary research project at the Roslin Institute involved developing metagenomic methods for culture-free prediction of antimicrobial resistance in canine urinary tract and skin infections, using nanopore sequencing.

In 2023, I took on the role of Senior Research Scientist at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, where my work mainly involves investigating the different ways we can use DNA sequencing to benefit the welfare of animals across the various veterinary hospitals on Easter Bush campus. This includes work to extend and eventually deploy my Roslin research at the cage-side, and collaborating on a variety of sequencing-based research projects with clinicians at the veterinary hospitals. I also manage the day-to-day running of the R(D)SVS's Hospital for Small Animals Clinical Biobank, collecting and archiving veterinary samples for future research.

Prior to joining the Roslin Institute , I worked for four years (2012-2016) as a bioinformatician for the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC), at MRC Harwell. In 2016, I moved to the University of Bath to study for a PhD. My PhD research focussed on the use of long-read sequencing (particularly nanopore sequencing) to investigate the genome of the bacterium which causes whooping cough, Bordetella pertussis.

My main research interests are microbial sequencing, genomics and bioinformatics. I am also a keen science communicator, having received a Postgraduate Diploma in Science Communication and Public Engagement from the University of Edinburgh in 2016.
